Italian

The course aims to provide the basic tools of the methodology of social sciences: starting from the epistemological and methodological bases of the approaches to standard and non-standard research up to the technical and operative characteristics of some tools for gathering and analyzing information. The aim is to train the critical abilities and skills needed to devise a research design and effectively conduct research, to understand how scientific knowledge is built.

Development of knowledge of the concepts and basic categories of the theoretical and epistemological approaches of social sciences, as well as of the main empirical techniques. Development of critical analysis skills of the topics and of logical reasoning, methodological and technical skills to effectively conduct social research.

Lectures, seminars and classroom exercises. Student participation is encouraged. There will be presentations of empirical researches by guests.

Lessons will be held in the classroom or electronically, according to the University provisions relating to the security measures envisaged for COVID-19

Written exam with three open-ended questions for the course of 6 credits (duration 2 hours) and with four open-ended questions for the course of 9 credits (duration 2 hours and a half). Specific dispensative measures and compensatory tools are provided for students with DSA certification, as required by law and the University's regulations.
The final exam aims to ascertain the acquisition of knowledge and the ability to critically analyze the epistemological and methodological problems posed by social research.

The first part of the course is devoted to the presentation of the fundamental concepts of the methodology of social research (method – in the epistemological debate - techniques, concepts, statements) and of the methodological problems of empirical social research, considering the perspective of the two most important investigation strategies: quantitative and qualitative. The second part focuses on some of the research techniques as the interview with questionnaire (and the survey research), the in-depth interview and the participant observation. Ethnographic Research.
The third part of the course focuses on data analysis especially on single-variable analysis and on visual research: research with images and on images.
