Students attending the lessons have the opportunity to join exercising workshops and train in empirical research in Urban Sociology.
Type of Assessment
Through the interrogation on the reference texts, the oral exam will rate the acquisition, and the capacity to use autonomously, the disciplinary instruments which have been presented in the lectures.
More precisely the evaluation will focus on the following aspects:
- knowledge of the analytical tools in Urban Sociology;
- awareness of the trends of change in the Italian and European territorial contexts and of the corresponding sociological debate;
- knowledge of the methodological tools for the analysis of urban policies;
- capacity to use this knowledge in a coherent analytical framework;
- linguistic correctness and expressive effectiveness.
In case of the students who attend the lessons and who chose to develop a personal exercise, their individual exer cise report will contribute to the computation of the final grade (rated on 10) together with the interrogation on the reference texts (rated on 20).
Course program
Introduction to the tradition of Urban Sociology in the analysis of urban systems and to the most recent research on their current transformations, under the pressure of the gblobalization processes and in a framework of continuing urban sprawl.
the city, or, better, the urban systems are considered under their double classical sociological signification: as drivers of innovation and development, as particular political organisations.
The course focuses consequently
on the trends of change in local government and policies, allowing to better interpret the current transformation of the Italian scene in the larger context of the political and institutional innovation in the European Union, and to stress the possible contribution of the sociological approach in the definition of urban strategies and more generally of local public policies.
1. Between city and urban system; 2. The sociological description of urban systems; 3. Community and urban society; 4. Globalisation and "glocal"; 5. Urban systems as political systems; 6. Urban policies in transition; 7. Sociology and urban projecting.
The course, Ects 6 (48 hours) is destinated to the students of the third year of the laurea triennale in Scienze politiche in “Cesare Alfieri” school, but it is open also to studnets in architecture, engineering, geography.
