Course Content
The course focuses on the issue of the “Islamic veil” in German schools which is tightly linked to the problem of religious freedom and State neutrality in multicultural societies. Several judgments of the German Federal Constitutional Court and of the Courts of the Länder will be analyzed in order to examine the issue from the juridical point of view. Moreover the course will focus on the political debate regarding the “Islamic veil” in German schools as it is represented in the press

Learning Objectives
At the end of the course SS are expected to have acquired a deep knowledge of the subject. They must be able to understand complex texts in German and they are expected to have reached Level B1-B2 CEFR (in reading) and A2+/B1 in speaking.

The course focuses on the issue of the s.c. “Islamic veil” in German schools which is tightly linked to the more general problem of religious freedom and State neutrality in modern “multicultural” societies. Several judgments of the German Federal Constitutional Court and of the Constitutional Courts of the Länder will be analyzed in order to examine the issue from the juridical point of view. Moreover the course will focus on the political debate regarding the “Islamic veil” in German schools as it is represented in the press. To this end, several articles belonging to various German newspapers and expressing different views will be analyzed.
