Presentation

The new bachelor's degree in Political Sciences has been designed as a single degree with a multidisciplinary and comparative approach to offer students solid foundations, integrating different research approaches and methodologies and allowing students to make informed choices towards the various occupational and/or post-graduate study opportunities.

This course qualifies for access to a number of master's degree courses in this or other universities. It relates to the educational model used by the most prestigious European universities, where after a single degree offered at bachelor's level, there is a variety of master's programmes to choose from.

After the first year of common core subjects, the course is divided in 4 curricula:

a) Political Studies

This curriculum aims to provide students with the necessary methodological skills to create and implement public policies for the present day.

The deep changes forced by the world crisis demand that collective decisions take into account political representation, governing capability, civic participation and social control.

All this needs to be based on an innovative combination of new awarenesses and new skills on several disciplinary fields.

This curriculum is devised specifically to acquire these awarenesses and skills laying the foundations for a tangible "political professionalism". Therefore graduates can either continue their education in politics with post-graduate courses,or challenge their skills immediately as administrators in city or regional councils as well as working as analysts and consultants for such public institutions.

b) International Studies

This curriculum belongs to the international tradition that has always characterised "Cesare Alfieri" and it is aimed at providing multidisciplinary skills in law, political science, economics, compared sociology, international history, and area histories, all of which are core topics for international and European studies.

The multidisciplinary approach allows students to get a well-rounded education necessary to analyse and understand the modern world marked by a high degree of complexity.

Learning or honing English and another relevant foreign language are essential prerequisites. The programme prepares graduates for a career in international institution such as the EU or UN agencies, Italian and foreign non-profit organisations for cooperation, in TV and press foreign offices, or to continue academic study with a Master in International Relations and European Studies.

c) Communication studies

The syllabus is chosen considering the central role played by communication in contemporary societies.

It covers topics in sociology, economics, law, politics and history in order to be able to read and interpret adequately the contexts in which communication strategies and practices are defined and negotiated.

The interdisciplinary core studies and the specific knowledge acquired in cultural and communication studies offer graduates the theoretical and methodological tools to continue their studies with post-graduate courses. Alternatively, graduates will be able to put their skills to immediate use in the vast field of social, political and enterprise communication produced by public and private organisations, national and international, as well as in the cultural and media industry and the multi-faceted world of the new economy.

d) Social Studies

The Social Studies" curriculum takes an interdisciplinary approach in the fields of sociology, statistics, political science, history, economics and law; all of these, in fact, play a key role in understanding the dynamics of contemporary society and its changes.

Students gain also the necessary expertise to acquire and analyse social data, thanks to teachings in social research theory, quality and quantity poll techniques and statistics.

Graduates can either continue their studies to post-graduate level in Sociology or join the workforce with an adequate background to carry out the analysis of complex social problems, an activity of utmost importance for the support of social intervention and nowadays crucial also to monitor and plan actions in public, private and third sector organisations, at local, national or international level.
