For not attending students, in addition to the book mentioned, is required the study of the book: F. Cardini-S. Valzania, La scintilla. da tripoli a Sarajevo: come l'Italia provocò laprima guerra mindiale, Milano, Mondadori, 2014. They are also requested to submit a written report of 10 pages on a topic to be agreed with the teacher.

Course program
The course will examine the causes of First World War outbreak with particular reference to the Balkan wars and to colonial conquests, to come up with the Sarajevo attempt on June 28, 1914 and with the chain reaction aroused from this happening. Then the course will treat the Anglo-Russian alliance and the war propaganda until the Mussolini’s entry into the scene and the Catholic Church's role during the conflict. Particular attention will be paid to the war consequences, the origin of the radical transformation of Europe and its political physiognomy. In the second part of the course, some lessons will be reserved to prisoners of war in Italy. In particular, to the Italian concentration camps, to the forced labor of the Austro-Hungarian prisoners and their treatment. For this part of the course, the students will have the opportunity to work on the sources through the study of archival documents.
